The Pursuit of Purpose

What is my purpose in life?

This question has plagued humanity for what might seem like forever. I know it has been one of my most frequently asked questions, followed up by ‘Am I making the most of my life?’ and ‘What will bring me lasting happiness?’

We weren’t always so disconnected. Remember the last time you saw a baby marvelling over its toes or tasting its fingers? Babies are uniquely fascinated by themselves and as they grow they become curious about the world they live in. From their place of innocence they waste no time in the indulgence of ‘who am I?’, they get on with being brilliantly themselves. They automatically know it. Over time they learn to doubt their magnificence, made worse by their community asking them ‘What do you want to be when you grow up?’. This question alone implies that to be yourself is not enough.

Uncovering our potential

Enough of the doubting of yourselves. We’ve spent our lifetime with this indulgence. There are many points that we can use in astrology to indicate purpose, and many ways of discovering or rather ‘uncovering’ who we really are and how we can allow ourselves to reappear. With this knowledge to hand, we can learn to flow into our baby-like innocence, where we feel most at home, fascinated by life and reconnected. These are my favored astrological points/planets/asteroids and areas to explore for discovering life purpose:-

  1. North Node/MC/IC
  2. Part of fortune
  3. Vertex
  4. Talent (33154)
  5. Selene White Moon (H56)
  6. Vesta
  7. Chiron
  8. Hygeia (10)

Each of these areas of exploration focus us on part of our path and the recovery of who we might be. Each of these points, when interpreted together brings about a clarity of direction. These points can all be found on Astro.com. You  need to set yourself up with a profile and from there you can research your birthchart through the ‘extended chart selection’. You can add points 3-8 in the ‘additional objects’ section.

Understanding these points together

The asteroid Talent, its position in a chart and the aspects it makes to other points, planets and asteroids gives us a big clue as to what we have a natural aptitude for and how we might find ourselves on that path. The Vertex shows us what the world wants from us. It gives us a clear indication of what others want from us and how we can serve. Selene White Moon shows us our path to peace and how we can find serenity. If she is connected by aspect to another planet or asteroid, we get clues as to how you can find her. Vesta shows us our passion, zeal and the truth about ourselves that we can’t escape. Vesta is the guardian of our sacred flame, and shows us where we are dedicated to a cause. Chiron, the wounded healer is a life teacher. His position in the birthchart indicates where we have a sore spot, but through recognising what this means to us, often leads us to profound soul learning. It is through knowing ourselves that we can master ourselves. Hygiea shows our capacity to heal and learn. Our energy systems are vital to understand when considering our purpose in life. If you’re unable to understand your energy systems, it is difficult to give of yourself in the pursuit of purpose. Once you have a handle on your available energy and challenges to it, it is easier for you to connect into your sacred mission. The Nodes / MC / IC give us our karmic compass points in life which show movement from and to. I use these points more for timing and planning. These are of course essential to understanding your whole journey. If you consider what all of these might mean together, you can see how your purpose could just pop out at you.

In a rush to discover yourself?

if time is of the essence, then I would focus purely on the asteroid Talent and the point Vertex in your chart. These two combined will give you enough of an overview for a real ‘aha’ moment. In my experience with clients, these two points often reveal whether we are on or off course.

Using myself as an example, Talent is in my 3rd house, in the sign of Aquarius, conjunct my IC, asteroid Urania and Psyche. It is also sextile my Sun/Mercury conjunction in the second house and also sextile Chiron/Hygiea in the 6th house. If this was a client’s Talent, I might give them the following meaning:-

‘You shine at articulating diverse and unusual ideas within your community. There’s a natural desire to share and guide in a way that helps others to find themselves. Many of your ideas come from exploring and healing pain from childhood (sextile Chiron) and from expanding on ideas of soul, karma, belief systems and existence (conjunct Psyche). Astrology and cosmic psychology might give you the framework to do this within (conjunct Urania). This will be a natural pull throughout your whole life (sextile Sun), that has been one of your main preoccupations of thought (sextile Mercury). it is likely that your own need to understand yourself in your private moments (conjunct Psyche/IC) has led you to heal yourself and help others find their own healing (sextile Chiron in 6th house of work/health) ‘

The Vertex is even more telling. In my own example, it is in the 8th House in the sign of Gemini, trine Talent in the 3rd and sextile both Chiron and Hygiea in the 6th. If this was a client’s chart, I would add in…

‘You are often called upon to help people when they are in time of crisis. People come to you when they are in a period of transformation. Maybe you have noticed that you’re like a catalyst to change. You are often able to find the words that allow people to learn a more helpful perspective, from where they can find a fresh healing (8th house – teaching/transforming). Your own direct experience of learning about health (Chiron and Hygiea in the 6th) can guide you to help others find their own path to wellness’

As we explore this subject further in subsequent blog posts, we’ll be filling in the gaps and examining all the other points mentioned above. Together, you’ll have a useful overview to how your cosmic coding at birth has always revealed ways to find your peace. With this under our belts the next step is to consider a 360 review of our purpose – by looking through the charts of our loved ones at where we feature in them! Exciting stuff eh?

Drop me a comment, if you have a query in the meantime.
